The American Coalition for Ocean Protection (ACOP) consists of beach communities and non-partisan think tanks. Our members are located in states along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Massachusetts.
We are united in our opinion that there are severe problems and impacts that these massive offshore wind turbines will cause and have not been adequately considered and have already led to the approval of the "Vineyard Wind" project with dozens of violations to the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Administrative Procedures Act.
The current administration’s misguided belief that ocean wind turbines will have any significant effect on climate change leads to unwise policies and procedures. President Biden is publicly pushing his administration to “cut the red tape” to get going on constructing these offshore wind projects without any thought to the potentially destructive consequences these wind turbines may cause or have proven to have caused in Europe.
Ocean Environment Legal Defense Fund
All donations raised through the efforts of ACOP under the "Ocean Environment Legal Defense Fund" (Fund) are restricted to covering legal expenses, including any administrative expense such as audit, accounting, fees, filings, and the like.
As the Fund grows toward our target goal of $500,000, we anticipate having sufficient funds to assist members of ACOP with local issues that turn into lawsuits.
Who Manages the Fund?
The Fund is managed by two executives from the Caesar Rodney Institute, a non-partisan 501(c)(3) think tank in Delaware, namely David Stevenson, Policy Director, and John Toedtman, Executive Director. Mr. Stevenson is a national environment and energy expert. In addition, there is an ACOP "Advisory Board" that assists with the fundraising efforts and disbursement of the Fund.
The overall objective of the Fund and other ACOP activities is to at least create a permanent offshore wind exclusion zone to 33 miles off the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. Given the premium cost of offshore wind, the likely abandonment of commercial fishing in any lease area, and the negative impacts on marine life, we expect no suitable lease area will be found anywhere off the east coast.
